This month, we’re focused on pay equity.

What is pay equity?
Nationally, women on average are paid 77 cents to every dollar a man makes, a gap that is even larger for women of color. Pay equity is how we eliminate sex and race discrimination in the wage-setting system.

What can we do about it?
The WNY Women’s Foundation was instrumental is getting a salary history ban put into place across New York State. This was an important first step. Now, related bills have been introduced in the New York State Assembly and Senate that would require salary range transparency.

What is salary range transparency?
Salary range transparency requires employers to disclose salaries, or compensation ranges, to applicants and employees. Clearly communicating salary range in job postings is a great step towards pay equity!

Why does salary range transparency matter?
The absence of transparency in pay practices is a leading factor underlying pay discrimination. Lack of transparency perpetuates environments that foster systemic racial and gender-based disparities. Those most impacted are women of color, women with disabilities, LGTBQ+ individuals, and mothers.

So let’s take action! 
Contact your reps, learn more about the issue, and be a strong advocate for the importance of pay equity in your workplace.
